Things To Do
Pomfret is located in Connecticut's Quiet Corner, which encompasses almost 800 square miles of beautiful countryside dotted with town greens, historic mill villages and rural agricultural areas and is aptly described by The Boston Globe as “a hidden treasure” and by The New York Times as "classic New England without traffic or kitsch."
Incorporated in 1718, the town of Pomfret, just 10 minutes from the Putnam "Antique District", (known as all of New England's center for antiques) is located in the center of Quiet Corner's rich tapestry of rolling hills and meadows, quaint antique and specialty shops and scenic back roads. Route 169, a nationally designated scenic byway, runs right through Pomfret and the Quiet Corner. Additionally, this year, the 4.5 mile portion from US 44 to US 44/Route 169 in Pomfret was also approved as a scenic road. This designation helps protect a road forever from state or other modifications that might mar the scenery. Flanagan Hill is situated at a virtual crossroad of both of these beautiful, and now officially declared, scenic and protected roads. <...sigh....>
The thirty-mile Air Line State Park, a former railroad bed now a hiking and mountain-biking trail, also passes through Pomfret where it connects with the Connecticut Audubon Society's little-known 700-acre Bafflin nature Sanctuary and its vast rolling meadows, forests, streams and spectacular fertile grasslands and habitats.
Pomfret also boasts fine dining and an award-winning winery, where gourmet meals are served at the fireside tavern or outside in the wine garden. A journey to Pomfret and the Quiet Corner seems like a world away but is easily accessible from New York City (3 hours), Boston (1.25 hours) Hartford (45 minutes), and Providence (40 minutes)
